JUXTAPOSE: COLLAGE & ASSEMBLAGES PROJECT
- A Challenge Project curated by Steve Liggett who says: “Sometimes it is important to give artists a little challenge so that they can stretch past any ways of thinking that they have become accustomed to. And so, I offer this “challenge project” to help you discover new ways of working or to provide an opportunity to present what you have created in this way of working.”
Collage, (from the French: coller, "to glue" or "to stick together";) is a technique of art creation, primarily used in the visual arts, but in music and poetry too, by which art results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.
Assemblage is art that is made by assembling disparate elements – often everyday objects – scavenged by the artist or bought specially.
“Take an object / Do something to it / Do something else to it. [Repeat.]”. from Jasper Johns sketchbook, 1964
This challenge project has two parts:
1) The first part will be a series of JUXTAPOSE WORKSHOPS with various local artists held from January to April, 2025 that will encourage each participant to explore new materials, concepts, images, songs, movements that they identify as their own in order to build collages and assemblages.
2) The second part will be a juried JUXTAPOSE EXHIBIT & PERFORMANCE NIGHT in May of all forms of expressions to present these assemblages and collages. Details below:
JUXTAPOSE EXHIBIT & PERFORMANCES
You are also invited to submit your own original Collage or Assemblage Artwork or Performance in any media.
