TITLE: Intro to Neuro-Art-Doodling by Nichole Montgomery
Nichole Montgomery often refers to her creative process as doodling—a practice she has engaged in since the age of six. At that time, it seemed like a whimsical activity that others did not recognize as art; she was merely playing. However, many were unaware that she was actually using this practice as a therapeutic tool to cope with the traumatic experiences of her childhood. As she grew older, Nichole continued doodling alongside the persistent challenges in her life.
Nichole has a constant need to create; when she sits still and does not move, her mind races, and her body feels discomfort. As a result, Neurographic art has become a valuable tool for her. It allows her to zone out and channel her thoughts directly onto the paper with her pen.
Though she is neither an instructor nor certified in the normal form of Neurographic Art, Nichole has 40 years of experience intertwining outer lines with inner lines, incorporating a curve at each point of connection she calls Neuro-Art-Doodling.This meditative and intuitive artistic process connects the unconscious and conscious mind through neurons, the brain cells responsible for transmitting information. The technique was developed by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2014 called Neurographica Art. while Nichole created her own method in the mid-1980s.
Nichole acknowledges that her artwork and creative process may not resonate with everyone, but that is not her primary concern. What truly matters is how others interpret her work. She aims to guide participants through this creative journey, hoping they can experience and understand how such artistic practices can foster a sense of disconnection from their surroundings, similar to the profoundly immersive experience of reading.
Nichole would greatly appreciate it if participants could share this information with others after the class, particularly young people and trauma survivors of any age.
CONCLUSION
Neurographic art embodies both simplicity and creativity, transforming the act of drawing into a therapeutic practice. It offers a personal and accessible means of exploration that can promote emotional healing, self-awareness, and mindfulness. Whether utilized independently or as part of a structured therapy program, Neurographic art can significantly impact the functioning of the brain and the body’s overall sense of well-being.
Nichole aspires to become a certified Neurographic art instructor after her youngest child graduates from Booker T. With a decade of experience in veteran nonprofit work at local, state, and national levels, she has embarked on a journey to support fellow veterans and her community through art. Nichole hopes to integrate this practice into therapy for PTSD & other trauma based mental health issues, as it has profoundly benefited her personally. She believes in the importance of selflessness and recognizes the collective human experience of struggle. If grounding oneself through a non-addictive practice is possible, why not give it a try? Participants are encouraged to join her class to learn her approach and further explore additional Neurographic art techniques online to enhance their skills.
Participants only need to bring a pen; colored markers or pencils are optional. Nichole will provide dried watercolor on mixed media paper attached to a board, as well as a blank sheet after the first lesson.

Since 2007, Nichole has also pursued photography and digital art, earning an Honorable Mention award in 2024. Now that her children have grown and embarked on their own journeys, Nichole took the bold step to become a full-time artist in 2024.
